How Much Should Preschoolers Really Move — and How Much Screen Time Is Too Much?

If you’ve ever wondered whether your preschooler spends too much time on a tablet, or felt guilty about the TV that played while you made dinner — you’re in good company. Screen time is one of the most discussed (and anxiety-producing) parenting topics of our generation. And while movement gets less attention in the headlines, it matters just as much for your child’s development.

Let’s cut through the noise and look at what the research actually says.

How Much Physical Activity Do Preschoolers Need?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education recommend that children ages 3–5 get at least 120 minutes of physical activity per day — divided between structured and unstructured play:

  • 60 minutes of structured physical activity: Adult-led games, movement exercises, obstacle courses, dancing — activities with some direction and purpose
  • 60 minutes of unstructured active play: Free play where children move however they choose — running, climbing, jumping, exploring — without a goal or agenda

Children should also not be sedentary (other than sleeping) for more than 60 minutes at a stretch.

Why Movement Matters So Much

We often think of physical activity as something children do for their bodies — to build muscles and burn energy. But for young children, movement is essential for brain development too.

Gross motor play — running, jumping, rolling, climbing — activates multiple brain regions simultaneously and builds the neural pathways that support attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Children who get adequate physical activity tend to have better focus, better behavior, and better learning outcomes in school.

Fine motor play — drawing, cutting, building, manipulating small objects — develops the hand strength and eye-hand coordination that children will need for writing and self-care.

And outdoor play specifically offers benefits that indoor play cannot fully replicate: exposure to natural light (which supports vitamin D production and healthy sleep), contact with varied terrain and natural materials, and a scale of space that encourages adventurousness and creativity.

Benefits of outdoor play include:

  • Improved attention and reduced symptoms of ADHD
  • Stronger immune system development
  • Better risk assessment and physical confidence
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Enhanced creativity and problem-solving

Screen Time Guidelines for Young Children

The AAP’s current recommendations:

  • Under 18 months: No screen time other than video chatting with family
  • 18–24 months: If you introduce screens, choose high-quality programming and watch together so you can talk about what you’re seeing
  • Ages 2–5: Limit to 1 hour per day of high-quality programming; watch with your child when possible
  • Ages 6 and up: Place consistent limits on screen time and type

The “1 hour of high-quality” guideline for preschoolers gets interpreted in a lot of different ways by families. A few things to keep in mind:

Not all screen time is equal

Educational apps and shows designed for young children (think: slow-paced, interactive, language-rich, without fast cuts or flashing lights) are very different from adult entertainment content. PBS Kids, Sesame Street, and Bluey are not the same as YouTube autoplay. The quality and pacing of content matters.

Co-viewing multiplies the benefit

When parents watch with children and talk about what they’re seeing (“Look — Elmo is feeling sad. Why do you think he’s sad?”), screens can become genuinely educational. When screens are used as passive babysitters without interaction, the benefits are much reduced.

Watch the displacement effect

The bigger concern with screen time isn’t usually the screens themselves — it’s what they replace. If screen time is substituting for outdoor play, physical activity, social interaction, or shared reading, those losses matter. If it’s used during the 30 minutes you need to make dinner, that’s different from hours of solo screen time.

Establish consistent screen-free times

Meals, the hour before bed, and the first 30-60 minutes of the morning are good places to build screen-free habits. These windows protect family connection, sleep, and physical activity.

Balancing Movement and Screens in Your Day

A sample framework that many families find helpful:

  • Morning routine: screen-free, with active play before breakfast or after getting dressed
  • After school/daycare: outdoor play or active indoor play first; screens later if it’s screen time
  • Before dinner: structured physical activity (dance videos, backyard play) or family walk
  • After dinner: wind-down — calm play, books, or family time; screens off at least 1 hour before bed

This isn’t a rigid schedule — life is messier than that. It’s a default pattern that helps screens not become the default filler.

How BKP Structures Movement and Screens

At Brainy Kids Place, our daily schedule is designed around movement. Children have structured active play, outdoor time (weather permitting), and free movement built into every day. Our curriculum incorporates physical activity into learning — movement songs, gross motor games, dance, and active exploration are part of how we teach.

Screen time in our classrooms is used intentionally and sparingly — educational content that supplements our learning goals, not passive entertainment. Outdoor time is protected, not traded away when schedules get tight.

If you’re wondering how to build more movement into your family’s day, we’re happy to share what works in our classrooms — including simple games and activities that take five minutes and cost nothing.

See our active learning environment in person. Schedule a tour at Brainy Kids Place — we’d love to show you how movement and learning go together in our classrooms.
